What are Baby Growth Spurts?
Growth Spurts are when baby is noticeably breastfeeding more often than he usually would and has some extra fussing. Baby works very hard during these times to increase your milk supply for his new needs.
It's important to recognize and identify Growth Spurts as they happen many times throughout the first year of life. Typically, they occur in the first few days after baby comes home, around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months. They last a couple of days, and sometimes a week or so!
It is recommended that you not supplement your baby during these times! (Remember, even expressed milk feeding is still supplementing!) Baby is working through the natural process of supply and demand. Allow baby to continue breastfeeding as often as he needs to in order to build your supply to satisfy his growing needs.
Be educated and aware so that when these occur, you can celebrate baby's growth and find solutions to accommodate the baby's new demands into your work day.
