What are Baby Growth Spurts?

Growth Spurts are when baby is noticeably breastfeeding more often than he usuallywould and has some extra fussing. Baby works very hard during these times to increase your milk supply for his newneeds.

Growth Spurts are important to recognize as they happen many times throughout the first year of life. Typically, in the first few days that baby comes home, around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months. They last a couple of days, and sometimes a week or so!

It is not recommended to supplement your baby during these times! Even expressed milk feeding is still supplementing! Baby is working through the natural process of supply and demand. Allow baby to continue breastfeeding as often as he needs in order to build your supply to satisfy his current needs.

Be educated and aware so that when, they happen, you can celebrate baby’s growth and find solutions to fit the baby’s new demands in your work day.
